Washington (CNN) -- The Internal Revenue Service targeted other groups focused on government spending and the federal debt that were seeking tax-exempt status, in addition to tea party organizations, documents set to be released this week by the agency's watchdog show.

The IRS also applied extra scrutiny to applicants with statements that "criticize how the country is run" or that sought to educate the public on how to "make America a better place to live" --

http://www.cnn.com/2013/05/13/politics/irs-conservative-targeting/index.html
2.) bluecat - 05/16/2013
Well now it comes out that the tea partiers and any group wanting tax exempt status with "tea party" or "patriot" in their name were targeted 100%.

Then it comes out that supporters of Mitt Romney were also targeted.

Obama said he knew nothing about it.

Mmm, does this guy keep up on anything, Fast and Furious, Benghazzi, IRS?

Top IRS Official to Plead Fifth

While the White House continues to insist that the President himself didn't even know about the current IRS scandal until he heard it on the news this month just like the rest of us ('cuz the people who work for him, who knew about it for quite some time, decided that their job is to keep their boss blissfully ignorant of impending major scandals)....you have the DNC's Communications Director Karen Finney trying to claim it's all much ado about nothing by asking, "Why didn't Romney make more of a big deal about it during the election?"

You have to be right. Howard Dean must have a hell of a lot of old prescription pads for this bunch...
41.) DParker - 06/04/2013
Seriously though, I think a lot of it boils down to the ability to convince yourself that you and your side are so right/smart/good, and those other guys are just so wrong/stupid/evil that you can rationalize just about anything that furthers your political agenda. At that point things like principles are perceived as impediments that just get in the way of your noble pursuit of what you believe to be the greater good.
42.) Swamp Fox - 06/04/2013
Right. Before I realized that having a conscience was the main thing, and that could have serious consequences to getting your Zs, I was gonna post that these things come down to a sense of superiority, entitlement and invincibility.

If I think of any other polite words that apply, I will update that list.
43.) DParker - 06/04/2013
That's why I don't get all that upset when I know a politician is lying to me, so long as he/she also knows they're lying. It's the true believers...those who have managed to convince themselves that the nonsense they're spewing is actually true...who worry me.
44.) Swamp Fox - 06/04/2013
My advice then, is to drink heavily and often...

"...There's an irony to occupying the Oval Office. When presidents think they're bigger than the job they hold, they shrink in office. When they think they're smaller than the honor they've been temporarily bestowed, they grow into it. Obama has done nothing but shrink.

Last week, the president of the United States attacked Karl Rove by name — twice! — in a speech. He recently begged a crowd of black supporters not to "make me look bad" by staying home from the polls. In an interview with Rolling Stone, he scolded young voters that if they don't vote, it will be proof they "weren't serious in the first place."

It never dawns on him that were it not for the unseriousness of those voters, he might still be a one-term junior senator from Illinois.

"You know, I actually believe my own bullshit," Obama told the author of "Renegade," Richard Wolffe.

Exactly. And that why he's gotten into this mess."

"The president had even higher hopes for Rice, but those plans derailed when it became clear that Senate Republicans weren't going to let her September 16, 2012 parade of inaccuracies slide. Use of some lists of conservative labels for further screening stopped in May 2012 when IRS officials were first notified of the practice.

However, Werfel's review showed that other inappropriate lists continued to be used until as recently as this month by the unit that handles tax-exempt applications.

Werfel was informed on June 12, 2013, that other BOLO lists were still in use. He immediately suspended use of any BOLO lists by the unit that handles tax-exempt applications, his review said.

Finally some good news regarding the IRS. Their spending habits are now curbed. Yeah!

WASHINGTON – Another government watchdog report has flagged inappropriate behavior at the IRS, this time claiming government credit cards were used to make questionable purchases on items ranging from wine to online pornography.

The report said IRS credit cards paid for 28 bottles of wine at the 2010 luncheon for tax officials from other countries. There were 41 guests.

In another case, cards were used to make questionable purchases of decorative and give-away items including plush animals, bandanas, kazoos and a rented popcorn machine.

Another cardholder allegedly made $2,655 worth of personal purchases -- the report said credit card information indicates it was spent on diet pills, romance novels and other items, and that the purchaser may have provided false receipts to justify it.

Two IRS credit cards were also used to buy online pornography, though the employees reported the cards stolen. One of the workers reported five agency credit cards lost or stolen.

The report said the IRS has inadequate controls to stop inappropriate purchases.

The report was issued by the same watchdog that flagged the IRS' inappropriate screening of conservative groups that were seeking tax-exempt status. The IG office has also criticized the agency for its conference spending practices, though agency leaders say that spending has been curbed.

I've been following that one since she first made the claim (her being the first MSM reporter to break the Fast-and-Furious story I tend to pay attention to her). But honestly this is a tricky one. On the one hand nothing at all would surprise me in the way of "dirty tricks" by those either in or connected with the current administration...or even other parts of the fed.gov. On the other hand, millions of people have their PCs hacked all the time by scammers, thieves and just general nerdy losers with too much time on their hands, and there's no reason to assume that she's less likely to be a victim of that than anyone else.

So at this point I'm taking a wait-and-see approach, neither dismissing it out-of-hand nor assuming that it's anything other than a garden variety hacker.

Personally, I'm not sure why everyone thinks she can't name names without immunity. FBI Cracks Down on Insane Clown Posse

No, they're not investigating the Obama administration, the DOJ, IRS, ATF, MSNBC or MoveOn...

With two platinum albums and five gold albums, the hard-core hip-hop duo known as Insane Clown Posse has a legion of loyal fans. But none, apparently, at the FBI headquarters in Washington, where anyone who listens to the posse’s harsh music is regarded as a gangbanger who should be under constant watch...

Perhaps Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. can find new tasks for the FBI if agents have too much time on their hands. He could assign them to investigate the Internal Revenue Service for abusing political opponents of President Obama, or to get to the bottom of what really happened at Benghazi.

When they clear all that up, there will be time enough to go after the “small number” of people who wear clown makeup to pursue dreadful noise disguised as music.

Tough Break For The IRS

A Long Island man tripped over a telephone cord during an audit, sued the IRS and came away $862,000 richer — and he doesn’t have to pay any taxes on the windfall, The Post has learned.

William Berroyer, 66, the father of a Suffolk County cop, claimed he could no longer enjoy activities from golf to sex because of injuries suffered when the cord wrapped around his leg in a Haup*pauge IRS office in 2008.

The IRS argued that Berroyer, of Nesconset, was exaggerating his injuries, but Judge Arthur Spatt found the agency liable for pain and suffering, court papers show.

The former businessman was hammering out a repayment deal with the IRS for his $60,000 bill when he was injured...

Testifying for the IRS, Dr. Arthur Rosen said, “There is no physical basis for the defect that the patient claims.”

Despite the award, it could have been worse for Uncle Sam.

Berroyer was seeking $10 million in the lawsuit and claimed that he had been wheelchair-bound ever since the injury.

But Judge Spatt didn’t buy that claim, and limited the amount of the payout...

Ms. Lerner, what exactly does ‘wanted to fix the problem caused by Citizen United’? What exactly does that mean? Would you please turn the mic on?

Lois Lerner: My counsel has advised me that I have not waived my constitutional rights under the Fifth Amendment and on his advice, I will decline to answer any question on the subject matter of this hearing.

Issa: So, you’re not going to tell us who wanted to fix the problem caused by Citizen United?

Lerner: On the advice of my counsel, I respectfully exercise my Fifth Amendment right and decline to answer that question.

Issa: Ms. Lerner, in February 2011, you emailed your colleagues in the IRS the following:

“Tea Party matter very dangerous. The could be the vehicle to go to court on the issue of whether Citizen’s United overturning the ban on corporate spending applies to tax exempt rules. Counsel and Judy Kindell need to be on this one please….Cincy should probably NOT have these cases – Holly please see exactly what they have, please.

Issa: “What did you mean by Cincy should not have these cases?”

Lerner: On the advice of my counsel, I respectfully exercise my Fifth Amendment right and decline to answer that question.

Issa: Ms. Lerner, why would you say Tea Party cases were very dangerous?

Lerner: On the advice of my counsel, I respectfully exercise my Fifth Amendment right and decline to answer that question.

Issa: In September 2010, you emailed your subordinates about initiating a ‘c4’ project and wrote ‘We need to be cautious so there isn’t a, per se, political project.” Why were you worried about this being perceived as a political project?

Lerner: On the advice of my counsel, I respectfully exercise my Fifth Amendment right and decline to answer that question.

Issa: Mike Seecho, manager of EO Technical in Washington, testified that you ordered Tea Party cases to undergo a multi-tier review. He testified, and I quote, “She sent me emails saying that when these cases need to go through multi-tier review, and they will eventually have to go to Ms. Kindell and the chief counsel’s office.” Why did you order Tea Party cases to undergo a multi-tier review?

Lerner: On the advice of my counsel, I respectfully exercise my Fifth Amendment right and decline to answer that question.

Issa: Ms. Lerner, in June 2011, you requested that Holly Pause obtain a copy of the tax exempt application filed by Crossroads GPS so that your senior technical advisor, Judy Kindell, can review it and summarize the issues for you. Ms. Lerner, why did you want to personally order that they pull Crossroads GPS, Karl Rove’s organization’s, application.

Lerner: On the advice of my counsel, I respectfully exercise my Fifth Amendment right and decline to answer that question.

Issa: Ms. Lerner, in June 2012, you were part of an email exchange that appeared to be about writing new regulations on political speech for 501c4 groups and, in parenthesis, your quote ‘off plan’ in 2013. Ms. Lerner, what does ‘off plan’ mean?

Lerner: On the advice of my counsel, I respectfully exercise my Fifth Amendment right and decline to answer that question.

Issa: Ms. Lerner, in February of 2014, President Obama stated that there was not a smidgen of corruption in the IRS targeting. Ms. Lerner, do you believe that there is not a smidgen of corruption in the IRS targeting of conservatives?

Lerner: On the advice of my counsel, I respectfully exercise my Fifth Amendment right and decline to answer that question.

Issa: Ms. Lerner, on Saturday, our committee’s general counsel sent an email to your attorney saying, “I understand that Ms. Lerner is willing to testify and she is requesting a one week delay in talking to chairman wanted to make sure that was right. Your lawyer in response to that question gave a one word email response. “Yes.” Are you still seeking a one week delay in order to testify?

Lerner: On the advice of my counsel, I respectfully exercise my Fifth Amendment right and decline to answer that question.

Issa: Ladies and gentlemen, seeking the truth is the obligation of this committee. I can see no point in going further. I have no expectation Ms. Lerner will cooperate with this committee and therefore we adjourn.

I have to say she looked refreshed after she enjoyed her four-month (?) paid leave of absence and eased into retirement. We all should have found such a gig.

One thing I've missed in all this is why was the question she was asked that opened all this up planted in the first place? I'm a bit of a news hound, but somehow I've never read or seen a discussion of this.

Anyhoo, I'm no expert on Roberts Rules of Order (I've never run a meeting that was much beyond making sure you had a quorum and that everyone knew what yay and nay meant, LOL) but Cummings proved himself a hammerhead once again. And yet most of the negative focus in the media is on Issa.

I saw some knucklehead with a D after his name getting interviewed the other day and he said (in a hostile manner) that "this" (either the interview or the targeting situation; it was unclear) should not be a launching pad (my phrase) for calls to abolish the IRS.

Of course, the proper response of the interviewer to that question is "Why shouldn't it be?" but-- of course again--- that question was not asked.

Former IRS official Louis Lerner and her colleagues at the tax agency were under a tremendous amount of pressure from President Obama and other Democrats to scrutinize a Tea Party applicant for public disclosure, despite rules protecting the privacy of unapproved applications, according to a staff report from the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

All those emails would have been backed up to tape on a nightly basis and stored offsite. It's pretty standard protocol for any type of agency.

The fact that they are all gone now just tells you this thing is a lot bigger than Ms. fat face. I realize I'm not telling you guys anything you don't already know or suspect.

I don't know how it works and I could have misunderstood the depth of the hole the records are "known" to have disappeared into.

Doesn't really matter because I don't believe anything they say anyway, and at this point I'd think anybody who is even half-way tuned in feels the same way about this bunch.

A while back I was reading an article about state attorneys general choosing to NOT enforce their own state laws (range of topics). The state is their client and AGs are elected or appointed to represent their client, which in turn is supposedly representing and reflecting its client (the people) through things like--you know-- elections and the processes of a representative democracy. It's the AG's JOB to support and defend the laws of his state, and beyond that, a lawyer is OBLIGATED to represent the interests of his client.

I came to the conclusion that if this disregard, shown from the President down to the AGs and beyond continues, it sends a pretty clear message that laws are optional. (And when they're not, they might just be whatever the top dog says they are, and what's convenient, at best.)

It won't be long before regular joes just give up and start believing laws are a joke. Maybe we're they're already.

I think we're at least at a point where the average person's reaction to laws, lawmakers and law enforcers is "Talk to the hand."

Just thought a link would be interesting to the people who would find it interesting, since-- if anything-- I understated Hillary's disconnection from reality...

During a March 2009 meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Geneva, then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton presented the Russian with a small green box with a ribbon. Inside was a red button with the Russian word “peregruzka” printed on it which Hillary believed meant "reset" unfortunately it means "overcharged."

Five years later after Snowden's sanctuary in Russia, Putin outmaneuvering Obama regarding Syria, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, many would argue that U.S./Russian relations are at their lowest point since the Cold War. Not Ms. Clinton however, as witnessed by this segment of her BBC interview:

Interviewer: You famously pressed the reset button. Are you embarrassed by that now, that gesture?

Clinton: No I think it was a brilliant stroke which in retrospect it appears even more so...

Memories: I always thought the number of Bill Clinton enemies audited by his Internal Revenue Service was a bit high to be coincidental.* When Clinton accuser Paula Jones was audited in 1997, Clinton’s press secretary Mike McCurry denied White House involvement:

”None whatsoever” … “We may do some dumb things from time to time but we are not certifiably insane,” Mr. McCurry said. ”The I.R.S. and the I.R.S. solely is the one that makes decisions about the enforcement of tax laws.”

We now know, of course, that you don’t need direct White House involvement to politicize the IRS, at least for Democrats.** The underlings know what to do! The idea that they are apolitical professionals was always a myth.*** It’s even more of a myth now, in the era of Daily Kos and Greg Sargent. I wonder if McCurry, now safely through the revolving door, would like to revisit his statement. …

P.S.: According to a Judicial Watch filing, the Clinton enemies audited included

Clinton paramours Gennifer Flowers and Liz Ward Gracen, sexual assault accusers Paula Jones and Juanita Broaddrick, and fired White House Travel Office Director Billy Dale.

as well as these organizations:

The National Rifle Association, The Heritage Foundation, The National Review, The American Spectator, Freedom Alliance, National Center for Public Policy Research, American Policy Center, American Cause, Citizens Against Government Waste, Citizens for Honest Government, Progress and Freedom Foundation, Concerned Women for America and the San Diego Chapter of Christian Coalition.

IRS lawyer: Lois Lerner's BlackBerry deliberately destroyed after start of congressional probe

Lois Lerner’s BlackBerry was intentionally destroyed after Congress had begun its probe into IRS targeting of conservative groups, a senior IRS lawyer acknowledged in a sworn declaration.

Thomas Kane, Deputy Assistant Chief Counsel for the IRS, wrote in the declaration, part of a lawsuit filed by Judicial Watch against the IRS, that the BlackBerry was "removed or wiped clean of any sensitive or proprietary information and removed as scrap for disposal in June 2012."

That date - June 2012 - is significant because by that time, ex-IRS official Lerner had already been summoned before congressional staffers who interviewed her about reports of the IRS' targeting of conservative groups.

"We had already talked to her. Our personal staff and Oversight Committee staff had sat down with Ms. Lerner and confronted her about information we were getting from conservative groups in the state of Ohio and around the country," Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, told Fox News.

"If you intentionally destroy evidence, that is a crime. If you make a statement in court saying the evidence is not available and it is, that is also a crime," said Jay Sekulow, Chief Counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice.

The IRS did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment.

IRS says it has lost emails from 5 other employees related to probes

The IRS said Friday that it has lost emails from five other employees involved in congressional probes into the agency's targeting of conservative groups, leading one top Republican to declare "this pattern must stop."

The announcement comes after the agency said in June that it could not locate an untold number of emails to and from Lois Lerner, who headed the IRS division that processes applications for tax-exempt status. The revelation set off a new round of investigations and congressional hearings.

http://nypost.com/2015/07/26/obamas-pathetic-attempt-to-spin-the-irs-scandal/

No sooner did President Obama claim last week the IRS scandal was just a mirage than new evidence emerged to show it was anything but.

The conservative group Judicial Watch says documents it obtained “confirm” the agency targeted the donors of certain tax-exempt organizations. And the Government Accountability Office faulted IRS procedures, saying they failed to prevent bias in the selection of nonprofits for audits. That’s key, since the agency has been accused of targeting conservative groups.

Yet here was Obama on the Jon Stewart show denying the IRS did anything wrong.

“The truth of the matter is that there was not some big conspiracy there,” said Obama. “They were trying to sort out these conflicting demands.” Indeed, he added, “the real scandal” is that the agency doesn’t have the money to do more audits. Right.

So did the agency do anything wrong?

You be the judge:
•First, there’s the IRS’ internal auditor charging the agency targeted conservative groups applying for tax-exempt status.
• Then there’s Lois Lerner, the former IRS official at the heart of the scandal, pleading the Fifth and claiming her hard drive crashed, destroying all the evidence.
• Later it turns out the IRS deliberately erased her backups, after the messages were subject to a congressional subpoena.
•And we learn the Justice Department apparently colluded with the IRS, discussing “several possible theories to bring criminal charges under FEC law” against groups “posing” as tax-exempt nonprofits.
194.) bluecat - 06/07/2016
This weekend the IRS finally admitted it targeted over 400 conservative groups for intrusive scrutiny.
The Washington Times reported:

The government released names of 426 organizations. Another 40 were not released as part of the list because they had already opted out of being part of the class-action suit.

That total is much higher than the 298 groups the IRS‘ inspector general identified back in May 2013, when investigators first revealed the agency had been subjecting applications to long — potentially illegal — delays, and forcing them to answer intrusive questions about their activities. Tea party and conservative groups said they was the target of unusually heavy investigations and longer delays…

…Sixty of the groups on the list released last month have the word “tea” in their name, 33 have “patriot,” eight refer to the Constitution, and 13 have “912” in their name — which is the monicker of a movement started by conservatives. Another 26 group names refer to “liberty,” though that list does include some groups that are not discernibly conservative in orientation.

In May 2014 a Congressional report revealed 10% of Tea Party donors were audited by the IRS. This is 10 times more often than regular Americans.

The IRS Conservative Targeting Scandal involved:

Hundreds of conservative groups were targeted
At least 5 pro-Israel groups
Constitutional groups
Groups that criticized Obama administration
At least two pro-life groups
An 83 year-old Nazi concentration camp survivor
A 180 year-old Baptist paper
A Texas voting-rights group
A Hollywood conservative group was targeted and harassed
Conservative activists and businesses
At least one conservative Hispanic group
IRS continued to target groups even after the scandal was exposed
10% of Tea Party donors were audited by the IRS
And… 100% of the 501(c)(4) Groups Audited by IRS Were Conservative

LOL...The administration would like it to be closed...

Here's one of the more interesting points about this case, at this point. The IRS may have salted their list with a few non-conservative groups ---and I do mean a very few, in comparison--after the investigation started, to deflect from their outrageous focus on conservative groups. Let's see what the administration's apologists have to say about that, since they've been claiming against all evidence and common sense that there was no bias here because "liberal groups were scrutinized too." I call desperate BH on that (Buncha Hooey).

What are the odds someone loses their job, is forced out or is demoted over this?

For someone who gets all his information from the news, the best you can say is Obama certainly has a case of bad timing. You'd think he'd learn either to study more or keep his mouth shut. Just a few days ago, his economic victory lap in Indiana was followed one day later by a horrible jobs report (lowest job growth in something like 5 years, if I recall, and less than 15% of what we need to just keep our heads above water given population changes). And now there's this mirage thing to go along with the older "not a smidgen of corruption" thing. What's a poor boy to do?

It's almost like he doesn't know what's going on. :re:

Per the Washington Times:

That total is much higher than the 298 groups the IRS‘ inspector general identified back in May 2013, when investigators first revealed the agency had been subjecting applications to long — potentially illegal — delays, and forcing them to answer intrusive questions about their activities. Tea party and conservative groups said they was the target of unusually heavy investigations and longer delays,

Edward D. Greim, the lawyer who’s pursuing the case on behalf of NorCal Tea Party Patriots and other members of the class, said the list also could have ballooned toward the end of the targeting as the IRS, once it knew it was being investigated, snagged more liberal groups in its operations to try to soften perceptions of political bias.

"As we have identified in our filings in this case, important questions still exist regarding changes to the IRS‘ case listings that occurred after the IRS learned that the [inspector general] and congressional investigations had begun,” he said. “Based on these changes, which to date remain unexplained, a very real possibility — if not probability — exists that the IRS modified its targeting in light of the investigations, packing its own internal lists of targeted groups to support its preferred narrative, including by adding ideologically diverse groups.”

He said if that did happen, it would have “tainted” the list the IRS has now released.

The IRS declined to comment, saying its filing spoke for itself.
